A visit to the website, my first priority when checking out software, didn't go too well. WOT threw up a red circle threat warning and nearly had a hernia trying to tell me to stay away.

Maybe WOT was being a little too cautious so I decided to continue only to discover a website with grammatical errors (apparently the font they are using doesn't covert because you'll see question marks in lieu of various forms of punctuation).

Then there is that little mystery of odd phone numbers. The main phone posts to Washington, DC but the fax line is for Manhattan. And don't get me started on the Russian Federation mailing address (none for Washington, thank you).

So I went ahead and checked a few online reviews, most of which were hardly praiseworthy (and those that gave high praise were just too suspiciously optimistic).

With all the factors stacking up before I even attempt a download I've decided to stay away until I see some other reviews here.

Dear RRR,

I appreciate your attention.

You are missing one thing. We are offering True Sword for FREE and LIFETIME today and it has 30-day trial anytime on our website. You can check it anytime in virtual machines etc. Check how it is working - what it is detecting and what is not. Rogue products will never have it.

We are the victims of Symantec bureaucracy when they listing and delisting us every month based on their record:

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2006-062816-5804-99

Where it is clearly stated: Versions lower than 4.0

The purpose of this giveaway is to let people decide if it is really bad or not. Let users check our support and how we treat users.

I had a look at their website and since I read Russian it seems that this is perfectly legit Russian company with US represantation and resellers. They originate from a University in a provincial town on the Volga river. I don't think they are making rogue software.
What I don't like that they trash WOT in the manufacturer's comments here at GAOTD instead of explaining why their rating is so bad. It is not a good business practice to declare your opponents 'web totalitarians' and so on. Start with yourself. Tell us why WOT mistrust you and probably we'll understand. Sayin WOT is a bunch of corporates is not an argument, IMHO.
All said I'm rather inclined not to try this GAOTD.

I can't believe people are still going by what that totally unreliable WOT says. It's been proven useless time and time again. Many well known and respected web sites have been listed as being unsafe, simply because some fool with a axe to grind, doesn't like a certain site. Tell us about the software itself, and what your opinion is. No one cares about that useless WOT.

I usually don't weigh in on these battles over security wares, but this time I'm compelled to comment by the nature of the situation - although I have no use for this offering, based on the lack of an auto-backup system restore function and the choice of what to delete (as mentioned by others), I have not tried the software so this is a comment on the WOT and Symantec ratings being tossed around as reason to not even try the package.

As a loyal WOT user for years, I'm also aware of the problem with ratings as well - MOST of the comments are without FACTS to back up their claims of danger - for example in the case of Security Stronghold, you can see the word "virus" in the comments time and again, without any reference to an actual positive - and yes, I went to all the mentioned links here today and read the material before posting. While I use and respect WOT, I also routinely ignore it if sites - and I have found a number of them - do not appear to "justify" the bad ratings given them, or appear to be victims of someone with an axe to grind. SS appears to be one of those sites; WOT commenters seem to have jumped on a bandwagon and comment after comment merely repeats what was already written. It all seems to have stemmed from an initial bad experience, possibly a false positive as well as bad practice involving "scareware" and MAYBE some PUP (potentially unwanted program), yet not a single site proffers any proof of actual infection by malware of any kind in recent years - as already pointed out, even Symantec is referencing material that is FIVE years old. That, fellow GOTD users, is several lifetimes in computing - is it even relevant today?

My point here is this - SS is here today to be judged by us, willing users who install and comment on offerings. Instead we've had what amounts to a food fight, based on what I consider shaky ground by any standard. I refuse to dismiss this package based on those terms, it's not fair and it's not consistent with the purpose of the GOTD site, which I have participated in for years. If you want to actually judge a product, try it and rate it, that's why we're here; but if you merely want to carry on an old type of flame war - what's your point? Do you even know if this product has the same bad flavor as the old one? Or are you basing your negative comments on the old material, much of which has been repeated over and over without solid evidence, as anyone who looks it over can see.

Again, I don't need this software because the lack of auto-backup and choice prior to deletions are deal-breakers for me (after 30+ years in computers I at least know what NOT to delete and prefer to make that choice myself!), but the SS guy has asked a fair and reasonable question - to be given a trial and rating by the community, so I'm asking that too. That's all. Judge it on its' merits, as befits GOTD. Try 'em and fry 'em if they don't live up to the hype, or give them a star if they do well, but please, let's get past a rehash of old word wars and give the guy his chance. GOTD has a pretty good reputation for offering decent wares for free and I'm willing to give them and SS the benefit of the doubt today, as well as throw my 2 cents in (flame me if you like, I'm an old guy and already know it bounces off) - this product needs a few things before I'd try it, but watching the SS guy try and get a "fair hearing", here today and elsewhere, is excruciating and not consistent with the purposes of GOTD.
