I like this so far. It's a youtube browser,downloader and converter.
you can't sign in to your youtube account, though---the link is there but fields are blacked out, but, so what.
I've downloaded and converted a couple of songs to mp3 and they sound great.
I used to download from youtube with realplayer downloader but youtube changed some from .flv (flash video) to .swf, which realplayer can't download, so this prgram works out great and it hasn't crashed so far, either (unlike another video finder I had once). Running on custom XP,athlon. I haven't converted any videos yet.
The one problem I see here is
1. "always updates with YouTube’s change" and
2. "No free upgrades to future versions"
Many of the GOTD programs update automatically and as such lose their freeness, reverting back to a trial version with limited use or time of use. If this program is going to update itself with each YouTube change, is this indicative of the free GOTD license being lost?
mediAvatar YouTube Video Converter is a nice, polished Youtube downloader/converter with both extra baggage & limitations. Like the free VideoCacheView from Nirsoft, watching a Youtube video, mediAvatar copied the temporary .flv file stored/cached in the user temp folder. And just like VideoCacheView, mediAvatar couldn't recognize or save the video of the NCSIS episode playing on the network's site. What mediAvatar adds is a nice program window with built-in browser & video converter -- part of the price is a bit of baggage added to Windows [in comparison VideoCacheView is fully portable], & a converter without the customizable profiles you're probably used to. Both the impact to Windows & the lack of customization will bother some & not others, & I think where you stand in that debate determines whether you'll love or hate today's GOTD.
I couldn't get a look at what the setup file for mediAvatar YouTube Video Converter includes, but it can install the Flash player & it can install a couple of the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime setups. It can also modify your Internet Explorer installation, though it didn't add anything to the browser itself that I saw. I have had all 3 cause problems in the past, though the majority of the time they're OK, & both the Flash & C++ runtime installs are fairly common... my personal perspective is why take any chance you don't have to, but that's me. The mediAvatar Youtube Converter uses the common ffmpeg code libraries, so the video you export should be roughly the same as other converters, but you're not given details about the profiles [& can't change them anyway] so be careful -- a 55MB .flv set to be saved as .flv wound up being 300MB when done. You *May* be able to set the profiles to what you want by editing the xml files, e.g. "mp4.pf" in the program's "Profiles" folder.
The app itself takes up ~ 55MB in 777 files, 27 folders, with one folder added under [UserName] \ App Data. The C++ runtime installs, if needed & run, add about 3 dozen files, most in Windows' WinSxS folder, plus quite a few registry adds -- ideally installing these runtimes is a one-time thing, but in my experience it's too rarely worked that way, with what appeared identical versions installed to different folders, next to existing C++ runtimes. Total registry additions, installing the app, runtimes, & Flash player were close to 600, but your mileage will likely vary depending on what's already installed.
All in all I like the looks of mediAvatar YouTube Video Converter & the easy way it works, but *for me* the price in terms of impact isn't worth the benefits, & without being able to customize or set new profiles, the conversion part [again, to me] is next to useless. It's not so much the setup is *that* bad, as it is a feeling of "why bother?"
To use this program as full user, you should click on Help/About, then click on the blue link on the bottom for registration messagebox & enter the registration codes.
The program itself is done very well in my opinion. This is the first program which:
=> can really download & convert all movies from Youtube;
=> is constantly updated to fit Youtube's requirements;
=> can convert previously downloaded movies [so we have free converter] - this is important, not many downloader can do that;
=> does NOT contain any unwanted toolbars or annoying spy-like tools included & silently installed without our permission (one example.
When downloading from Youtube this is all-you-need.
I have tested & this is true that it only supports Youtube. Google Videos or metacafe didn't worked for me. In my opinion this program should try to download them as an optional feature without warranty, like DownloadHelper in Firefox. This is the only "lack" I have found in today's program, but it was mentioned, so the author is still fair.
And please remember that downloading videos without the author's permission is illegal ;-)

Tiago Barros.
