I've used AdMuncher for many years and have always found that it performs better than any other solution (that works only with a single web browser). The single install of AdMuncher will work with all the web browsers, and many other apps. You can define a rule or a whitelist - and it applies to all apps. There is no need to configure a separate program for each browser.
I strongly suggest that people download and try this giveaway - make the most of this offer while you can! But at least for the first few hours - it looks like their website is really getting a workover from enthusiastic GOTD visitors, so if it is slow or you get an error - leave it for a while and try again. This one is really popular.
NOTE: The software will run with all features without the registration code for 30 days. So you have 48 hours to get your registration code - no need to register immediately before you can use AdMuncher
The product support is excellent (and this basic edition does include support). If you are having trouble getting started or just have a question about a feature (or just want a chat) -

admuncher = hide, block (domain and/or path), remove, add, whitelist and modify content.
hosts = block (domain only)
If you were to score it - AdMuncher = 6, hosts file = 0.5
A hosts file will break videos that have video ads and won't be able to collapse the space the ad occupied on a web site. In cases where a website hosts their own ads - AdMuncher can block just the ads, the host file will only let you block the entire site.
While you did mention that you haven't read anything or installed or used the software - you should have your eyes opened as to how flexible and powerful AdMuncher is in removing ads from webpages, videos etc, versus the host file method of just blocking entire web domains - and leaving webpages to look like there was some critical error while loading.

If you are running Ad Muncher, Ghostery is not needed at all.

Quando baixei e instalei o software disponível hoje (AD Muncher Basic), li o readme.txt e prossegui para o cadastro no site do desenvolvedor, que me informou no final:
"Your details have been recorded and your license will be dispatched at the end of the promotion period.
Our sincere apologies for this delay, but it has become necessary because of the huge demand for these licenses. We were expecting a good response but this has been far in excess of our expectations.
Thank you for your patience, and again our sincere and profuse apologies for the delay."
Acredito que isso tira um pouco da credibilidade do processo de vocês, pois que certeza tenho eu que receberei a licença? Vou desinstalar o software agora, mas poderei reinstalá-lo quando me enviarem a licença? Aguardo...
