Audacity works really well and is free. Used it for years.

TK is correct saying that this PCWinSoft app uses older tech. Basic audio recording is pretty easy – Windows has always included a sound recorder [now called Voice Recorder – in the store if not installed] – so even if it is old tech, there’s little reason 1AV Sound Recorder shouldn’t work. The company that made your Windows device however might have decided that it did not want you to be able to record playing audio. In Windows you can only record audio from recognized audio inputs, and in those devices with this type of DRM, the audio drivers that come with the device do not include a working recording input for the audio headed to the speakers or headphone jack.

Sometimes all you have to do is turn that input on – it’s common with Realtek audio chipsets to have the Stereo Mix, on the recording tab of Windows Sound Control panel, disabled in properties. In that case click Stereo Mix, click the Properties button, & under Device usage at the bottom of the General tab, select Use this device. If that’s not the case, sometimes you can Google to find methods to turn on this feature in the registry etc., or there are virtual audio drivers available – many recording apps include them. TK mentioned Audacity’s WASAPI recording – it may sometimes have problems, so their tutorial page talks about a couple of alternatives, including those virtual drivers, & provides a couple of links. Or you might try an app like the prior GOTD, Audio Capture for Windows, which works similar to Audacity using WASAPI.
